I guess this kanji is one of the most well-known characters among non-Japanese/Chinese speakers?:)
This is FUKU, meaning good luck and blessing. It’s a good word. And it’s the same Fuku from Fukushima as well.
I have seen several foreign people for real who wear tattoos and accessories designed with this character. Do you happen to have one, too? :)

This is it, isn’t it?
福
I’ll never get over it how different calligraphy and Kanji looks. It’s always so difficult to get the right reading…

Lesson 12: what time you do things

icanspeakjapanese:

01/06/12

I’m sorry there wasn’t a lesson on Wednesday, I was moving out of my flat that day so had no time to get online and write up this lesson. I really need to start queuing these! Sorry!!

Anyway, we learned how to tell the time, so now we’ll go over to sat what time you do things, using this pattern:

PERSON は TIME に VERB.

Of course the person can be omitted, as is common in Japanese, and places etc. can be added as well.

Here are some examples:

私 は 7時 に 起きます。

わたし は 7 じ に おきます。

Watashi ha nana no okimasu.

I get up at 7.

私 は 9時 に 食べました。

わたし は 9じ に たべました。

Watashi ha kuu-ji ni tabemashita.

I ate at 9.

And lastly you might want to ask what time someone does something. For this question we will use “いつ”, roughly meaning when. Take note that the “に/ni” particle is not used in the question.

いつ 大学 (だいがく) へ いきますか。

itsu ni daigaku he ikimasuka.

For today’s homework, answer me the following questions in Japanese, then ask me a similar question:

1. いつ 起きますか。 いつ おきますか。 itsu okimasuka.

2. いつ 大学 / 仕事 / 学校 へ 行きますか。 いつ だいがく しごと がっこう へいきますか。 itsu daigaku / shigoto / gakkou he ikimasuka.

: 大学 / だいがく / daigaku = university

: 仕事 / しごと / shigoto = job/work

: 学校 / がっこう / gakkou = school
